For Siblings

It can be painful to see a brother or sister suffering from alcoholism. As a family illness, alcoholism affects every family member in a different way.

My older brother was diagnosed with cirrhosis and hepatitis C. Even with my own health issues, I felt compelled to stay connected with him although he had isolated himself from everyone.

When the court ordered my brother to enter a treatment center, his family became active with the treatment center’s family program. I saw big changes in my sister-in-law. I was attracted to those changes and started to attend her group sessions. During an intake meeting, the counselor said I had to attend Al Anon once a week in order to participate in the family session.

Many years ago, my sister asked me to take her to an A.A. meeting. Whoa! I could never do that. What if someone saw me? No, not me, never. I had a nice job in a big Fortune 500 company.
